چکیده

Previous distributed le systems have relied on either convention or obtaining dynamic global agreement to provide network transparent le naming. This paper argues that neither approach can succeed as systems scale to the kind of size that is anticipated in the current decade. We propose instead a novel name mapping scheme which relies on a fragmented, selectively replicated name translation database. Updates to the naming database are coordinated by an optimistic concurrency control strategy with automatic propagation and reconciliation. A prototype of the name mapping mechanism has been implemented and is in use in the Ficus replicated le system.

E2DR: Energy Efficient Data Replication in Data Grid

Abstract— Data grids are an important branch of gird computing which provide mechanisms for the management of large volumes of distributed data. Energy efficiency has recently emerged as a hot topic in large distributed systems. The development of computing systems is traditionally focused on performance improvements driven by the demand of client's applications in scientific and business domai...

Management of Replicated Volume Location Data in the Ficus Replicated File System

Existing techniques to provide name transparency in distributed le systems have been designed for modest scale systems, and do not readily extend to very large conngurations. This paper details the approach which is now operational in the Ficus replicated Unix ling environment , and shows how it diiers from other methods currently in use. The Ficus mechanism permits optimistic management of the...

CLIP: A Compact, Load-balancing Index Placement Function

Existing file searching tools do not have the performance or accuracy that search engines have. This is especially a problem in large-scale distributed file systems, where better-performing file searching tools are much needed for enterprise-level systems. Search engines use inverted indices to store terms and other metadata. Although some desktop file searching tools use indices to store file ...

Large Scale Distributed File System Survey

Cloud computing, one type of distributed systems, is becoming very popular. It has demonstrated easily processing very large data over commodity clusters is possible with correct programming model and infrastructure. One critical issue here lies in the file system (FS) [1]. In this report, I reviewed a number of outstanding distributed file systems (DFS).

ion in an efficient, secure, and robust manner. In addition, the issues of file location and availability assume significance. The simplest approach to file location is to embed location information in names. Examples of this approach can be found in the Newcastle Connection (Brownbridge et al 1982), Cedar (Schroeder et al 1985), Vax/VMS (Digital 1985). But the static binding of name to locatio...
